Care

caring for recycled polyester

wash up to 30 degrees (this is always the most sustainable choice when using a washing machine) and use a fabric bag to keep your items from breaking because of zippers. to avoid microplastics from floating to the oceans, use a guppyfriend washing bag.

what is recycled polyester?

most often recycled polyester is made out of industrial waste or post-consumer plastics like PET bottles. turning PET bottles into clothing means grinding, melting and extruding new fibers.

why love recycled polyester?

taking what is already there and giving it new life is super cool already - but recycled polyester is also super versatile! from waterproof bags to silky smooth fabrics you can do so many things.

recycled polyester production

producing recycled polyester uses up to 90% less water than regular polyester. still you have to be careful and only choose certified recycled fabrics. we think there are pros and cons with this fabric.  the main pro arguments: keeping plastic away from landfills and the ocean and a waterproof and stretchy fabric - just like polyester, but uses less energy to make. still, recycling has its boundaries and recycling uses a lot of energy too. also, recycled polyester can still release micro plastics.

Production

1. design

jan n june's founders anna and jula still do all of the design work themselves. they are mastering that challenge, despite living in two different countries. luckily they're pros at long-distance teamwork.

so the design process is split between hamburg and dubai.

2. raw material

while shopping slow and fair fashion pieces, we don't want you to miss out on the comfort and elegance of viscose. So let us introduce you to ECOVERO™: the austrian fiber supplier Lenzing AG has a sustainable take on viscose, based on renewable wood from certified sources. once you go sustainable, you never go back! check out the details here.

the ECOVERO™ for this piece of clothing was produced in austria.

3. yarn production

no matter which fibers we are talking about, they have to be spun into a yarn for further production steps. the production takes place in vila nova de famalicão, portugal

4. fabric production

the next step of jan n june's supply chain is to weave the yarn into a fabric.
the fabric production is located in vila nova de famalicão, portugal

5. manufacturing

that's where all the magic happens!
jan n june's manufacturers receive the patterns, fabrics, and other components like buttons or zippers and make them into a garment.

this piece is made in szubin, poland.

6. distribution

jan n june ships the products to us in one big shipment. we split our stock into our store and our little storage.

we send out our orders via swiss post.

a bottle of wine, hamburg, summer 2013. that’s when it all started with the question “why is there no stylish, sustainable, and affordable fashion label?”. anna and jula couldn’t find the kind of fashion label they were looking for, so they simply decided to start their own. and all that while living in three different countries. piece of cake right? today jan 'n june is a sustainable fashion success story. all their items are fairly and transparently produced in portugal and poland, using only sustainable materials such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, lyocell, and many more. each and every one of their final items are provided with a qr-code showing its eco-id, from the supply chain to final production.

fashion, but make it slow.
